Celia Baron
M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Mathematics Education
Celia Baron's passion for mathematics was extraordinary. She devoted her career to helping students discover the magic and wonder of numbers and develop a deep appreciation for mathematics.
She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1945 and showed an interest in numbers from a young age. She obtained her BSc Honours in Mathematics, followed by her MSc in Mathematics and finally her MSc in Mathematics Education from the University of Manitoba.
After graduating, she taught all levels of mathematics from kindergarten to grade 12. In 1996 she decided to leave classroom teaching to start her own business, MathImagine. She began by producing math puzzles, reviewing math resources and tutoring at all levels. From there, she partnered with the Manitoba Department of Education to create a new distance education curriculum for consumer math.
She loved designing this material and realized her passion was in creating. She decided to combine her extensive math knowledge, application of education theories, and ability to design fun puzzles into a new venture: MathImagine resources.
These resources include the Thinking Strategies series, followed by the Cross-Number series. She led numerous workshops and professional development events for teachers all across North America, sharing her material. She was awarded the Murray McPherson Award in 2015 for her contribution to the development of Mathematics Education in Manitoba. She passed away in 2016.
